Rough Weekend for Braden Chiaramonte
PETERSEN MEDIA: There’s no doubt that Braden Chiaramonte had speed at Ocean Speedway and Merced Speedway. However, the youngster from El Cajon, CA had one of those weekends where he doesn’t quite have anything to show for how fast he was.
“It was a rough weekend, but it’s the ugly side of this sport,” Braden Chiaramonte said. “We had such a fast car both nights, and I know for a fact we will bounce back stronger from a tough weekend like we had.”
Friday night at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA, Chiaramonte was in action with the USCS series they made a trip to Northern California. Earning quick time honors, the El Cajon, CA driver charged from fifth to finish second in his heat race.
Lining up second on the starting grid, Chiaramonte settle into the second position as he chased after the early leader on the slick racing surface. On the ninth lap, Chiaramonte had his momentum build up and was able to rip around the top to take over the top spot of the feature event.
Leading out front, Chiaramonte then hooked up in a hotly contested battle for the top spot until the caution flew on the 17th lap. Under the stoppage, some extracurricular activity broke out and it resulted in a folded up front end for Chiaramonte and his night was over just like that.
Making repairs and getting ready for Saturday night, the scene shifted to Merced, CA as the series invaded Merced Speedway.
Timing in second quickest in his qualifying flight, a second place finish in his heat race placed him in the second row of the feature event.
Running in third when the race came to life, Chiaramonte was able to move into second at the halfway point as he hunted after the leader. Running well on the reconfigured Merce Speedway, Chiaramonte powered into the race lead on the 22ndlap and looked very good out in front of the field.
As fate would have it, Chiaramonte ended up on the wrong end of a challenge for the lead with two laps to go and it sent him off the track and ended his night abruptly for the second night in a row.
“Despite how negative the weekend was, there was a lot of positives that came with it,” Chiaramonte said. “I know we have a super fast car and I think we will be a threat the next time we have it out.”
